A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING DR. BARBARA WEST CARPENTER ON BEING THE GUEST SPEAKER AT THE ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY FOUNDER'S DAY BANQUET ON FEBRUARY 13, 1999.

WHEREAS, Dr. Barbara West Carpenter, a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, will be the guest speaker at the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Founder's Day Banquet on February 13, 1999, at Jackson State University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Carpenter received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocational Education and General Science and a Masters in Secondary Education and Administration from Southern University and earned her Doctorate in Adult and Occupational Education at Kansas State University; and

WHEREAS, currently, Dr. Carpenter is a Professor and Director of the Center for Service Learning and Division of Continuing Education at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and

WHEREAS, on July 10, 1996, Dr. Carpenter, a life member and Zeta legacy, was unanimously elected International Grand Basileus of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., at its 76th National Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Carpenter is actively involved in many professional organizations such as the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity, Rotary International of Baton Rouge, Leadership Louisiana Fellow, Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and the YWCA; and

WHEREAS, in addition to serving her community, Dr. Carpenter enjoys sports, traveling, raising her spring garden and reading classic novels by African American authors; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Carpenter has been lovingly supported in all her endeavors by her faithful husband, Dr. Dana Carpenter, and two children, Erin Danyelle and Patrick Dana; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend outstanding educators such as Dr. Barbara West Carpenter:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Dr. Barbara West Carpenter on being the guest speaker at the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Founder's Day Banquet on February 13, 1999, at Jackson State University and extend to her our heartiest wishes for success in all her future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. Barbara West Carpenter and the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
